Anyway, I had my stimulator turned up high to address said nasty pain (for me "high" is an amplitude of about 5.7-6.0 but, of course, what's considered "high" is patient-dependent). However, I made a total rookie mistake when forgetting to power down the amplitude before turning off the pulse generator. This meant that when I turned it back on, I almost peed my pants from the strength of the stimulation I experienced. Lucky for me, this all happened when I was in a waiting room full of patients at the acupuncturist's office (would you expect anything less?). I let out a yelp the likes of which earned me a number of inquiring glances but I was too busy furiously punching in a more comfortable setting to really care (that's actually not true..I was embarrassed to the point that I high-tailed it out of there).
For those of you who may not know, the body experiences sensory adaptation with neurostimulation. What a patient can handle when first turning on the stimulator is usually much less than what he or she can handle after hours of stimulation.
So, the purpose of this post is to counsel those of you who are about to have a stimulator implanted or who have recently had one implanted. Do yourself a HUGE favor and remember to power down the system before turning it off (particularly when set to a high amplitude). Believe me, you'll thank me for it.
And that's my advice for the day. Now here's a picture of some kick-ass blue eggs I recently discovered at the grocery store. I've decided that, when I grow up, I want a pet chicken that can lay blue eggs....

I too have had that experience a time or two myself. It is not fun at all. Do you have to turn the ipg off when you have accupuncture, or is that your choice? BTW I had my first flight last weekend since receiving my scs - not even a patdown or question when I went through security. I looked in the back of the inflight magazine at the list of approved electronics. Listed there with hearing aids, watches and pacemakers in the category, ALWAYS ALLOWED, was neurostimulation devices and other implanted medical devices. So if there was any question about turning the thing off during takeoff and landing, the answer is no. Hurray! Whenever I have to turn mine off, the pain begins immediately and it takes forever to get back ahead of the pain.
Seernisse, I keep forgetting -- is your pain mostly in your back or mostly in your leg? I am making a decision as to peripheral vs. paddle stimulation, and it seems to me that only the paddle can get shoved in deep enough to address lower back pain. And my PM doc is an anesthesiolgist, does only peripheral, and has "no idea" about neurosurgeons to recommend. The Medtroniccs rep could only suggest one doctor, a long drive away from me, which makes appointments for any little thing very difficult.
I would love to have the pain relief so many of you are enjoying, but the logistics of doing neurosurgery are going to be daunting. If it was available close to home I think I'd go for it in a second, but I'm going to have to find and organize a new doc and all new support systens in the Bay Area, about two hours' drive away (hell at the best of times).
My pain is lower back with mostly leg pain (right side). I do not have the paddles, but have found that once the leg pain is in check the back pain is not such an issue. I guess it depends on where the source of the pain is located. Mine is a result of scar tissue from previous surgery and injury. The paddles are more secure and less likely to move around. In addition to neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons can also do the paddles. My ortho doctor offered to do mine had I chosen to go that route. If you have a good ortho doctor, perhaps you could get some input from him as to whether he could do the surgery, or if he could recommend someone. In any case I would make sure whoever does whichever type of surgery is quite experienced and has good results. My pm doctor did mine and did an outstanding job. Good luck with whatever you decide.
Hey Dan,
I just had my first neuroanatomy class today and my professor is a cute british neuro geek. Anyway, he is so nice and said we can talk about whatever issues we want. I'll try to get the most information that could be helpful, I know you probably know most of what is out there, but it couldnt hurt to see if he knows any additional information. P.S. I think this is going to be the best class I have ever taken.

Hi Seernisse:
Congrats on your first flight post-implant! I was surprised that I didn't set off any beepers at the airport..what about you? Also, thanks for posting this information about stimulators being listed in the "approved device" category. I didn't even think to look in the magazine when we went to Mexico.
You def. do not have to turn the stimulator off when having acupuncture. It's just something I decided to do because, for some reason, I've convinced myself that I'd be more receptive to the benefits of acupuncture without the stimulator on to distract me. Though, nobody said that would be the case. I do also like to gauge how much the acupuncture is helping me with pain..so I turn it off before the appointment and do a pain analysis and then do another pain analysis post-appointment. So far, I've found that I've felt better after every single appointment. Not too shabby!
Hi Margaret:
I feel for you that you'd have to drive 2+ hours to find a neuro. who places the paddle leads. That would involve a lot more planning (not to mention pain from having to drive/ride for that many hours!). Was the Medtronic Rep. you spoke with unhelpful?
If you ever decide to do a stimulator trial, that would provide you with more information as to whether the sub-cu leads are able to address your back pain. The leads they place for trials are similar to subcutaneous leads..so you would have an idea as to what type of coverage you'd experience in the back. I did not get much back coverage with the trial implants (though most of my pain is in my legs). I am able to get some lower back coverage with my paddle leads but only when the leads are turned up very high (which is sometimes just not what I want). There is a lot of tweaking involved with having a stimulator!
BTW...I've been meaning to congratulate you on your son's marriage. Though, I know it was a difficult weekend for you, physically. If only we could get a little respite from the pain for certain life events!!
Ro-Ro! Thanks for your comment! I'm glad you're excited about this professor and the class. Just how "cute" is this guy? ;)
I'm always keeping my ears open for additional info. so keep me posted if you learn anything interesting....
One time, I was at a doctor for an exam and laid down before turning my unit down a bit. I yelped as well and flew off that bed so fast the nurse almost dropped what she had in her hands. We had a good laugh, as I explained to her what SCS was and what had just happened. After experiencing that, I'm really good at remembering to turn it down nowadays. lol (For those who don't have one, it did not hurt - just more like a very strong sensation that definitely gets your attention! lol And you definitely cannot remain on your back while stimulation is high.)
Hi Danimal & others,
Tomorrow (3rd feb) is the big day when I go in for my lead revision surgery - I admit I am somewhat apprehensive - I had thought that being the 2nd time round it'd be better as I'd know what to expect. In some ways it's been harder knowing what to expect!
And the 2 month wait for the surgery was difficult. But I mustn't grumble - I'm so grateful they're going back in to fix it - and looking forward to another 4-6 weeks recovery with lots of good books to read.
I'll let you know how it all goes - hopefully next time I log on I'll be in blissful buzzing relief again... cheers

First time I have ever been in a "Blog"
I'm a Businessman, 55, in western PA. Have had back pain all my life.
Last thursday I had a stim test put in my back. I'm exremely confused and depressed with exchanging the pain with the constant tingling vibration.
Again I don't know how a blog works,I just randomly found this when searching the web, which in itself is not something I do. I guess the main thing is I would love to talk to somebody who has recently had this done. I am also wondering how serious should you life be interrupted before doing this.

Blue eggs are neat, we have a flock of chicks and they lay all different colors and believe it or not our farm raised eggs just taste much richer than the store bought ones, you can see it right in the yoke color. Good luck w/ your pain and your future pet chicken!
