Acupunctured!

So I started acupuncture recently. I tried it years ago but stopped after awhile when it wasn't cutting the mustard. Unfortunately at that time, I had a crap-fest doctor who didn't believe in pain medication (ironic, since she was a pain management doctor) and well, anyway, it was difficult for me to get into the acupuncture "zone" when I could barely get out of bed. Now that my pain is better controlled (and I've long since left that doctor in the dust), I decided to go back to acupuncture. It also didn't hurt that I was given a coupon for two free sessions at a local acupuncture center. I'm a sucker for free stuff.

When my clinician took me into the examining room, I handed her my intake forms, told her that I was "special" and said that I hoped she was feeling confident (aren't I mean?). She chortled a bit and gave me this knowing look and announced that "all her patients are special." I just nodded and smiled (but was totally thinking, "ya, but are all your patients freaking bionic?"). She looked at my intake forms and it wasn't long before she got all googly eyed and announced "wow..you really are special!" I tried not to be smug (it was difficult).

We reviewed my medical history and I showed her my incisions and how the stimulator works and we went over all the areas that should not be acupunctured (nothing over the battery and cable and no points on the spine). After that, I turned off my stim. and hopped onto the examining table (let's just pretend that I'm spry and that I can actually hop onto tables).

The doctor put about 12 needles in various parts of my body (including my scalp, fingers and right between my eyebrows). I can't say that the needle placement is painless but it's no more than a wee pinch.

Then came the Moxibustion (I'm totally down with the lingo). Moxa is the same thing as mugwort and acupuncturists use it in a few different forms. It comes in something called a Moxa pole (the thing that looks like a doobie pictured above in Gremmie's hand) and in a moss and cone form. Moxa poles are lit and allowed to burn slowly a few inches above the patient's skin, providing warmth to the area. Moxa cones are placed on the patient's skin (usually with a thin barrier in between) and the moss form is rolled up and placed directly on an acupuncture needle. When the Moxa is lit, it releases heat which seeps down into needle (or through the barrier if it's in cone form) and radiates into the body. It's pretty much divine. The only "thing" about Moxa is that it smells suspiciously like pot. I've been using a Moxa pole at home and I think it's about time I go tell my downstairs neighbors that I haven't turned into a stoner. I fear judgment.

Anyway, I've had three treatments thus far and, while it's still early, I have noticed that I've been sleeping better and I've had a little more energy. My pain levels have been shite the past few weeks (am dealing with a flare at present) but I have noticed that when I leave acupuncture, I feel better than when I arrived. Not half bad.

Well, that's my little update for now.

Hey Danimal - I loved the latest post & your entertaining account of acupuncture. I had acupuncture/refelexology sessions once a week for 4 years until my therapist moved interstate and they did help. However I haven't had any since the SCS implant so was very interested to hear of your experience.
Latest update for me - my PMS took one look at my latest X-Ray compared to the one taken on the operating table immediately post-implant and booked me in for revision surgery. The right-hand lead has moved dramatically so I'm going back in for revision - another 2-3 days in hospital and another 6-8 weeks recovery!
I'm just grateful that they're going to do it - though as they're currently using only one of 16 electrodes I guess they don't have much choice!
Sadly I have to wait til early February to get it done but I guess with the silly season and all the time will pass quickly - this time round I'm going to make sure I don't bend, twist or lift anything - though my PMS did mention the possibility of surgical leads if this revison doesn't work. Just goes to show - when you turn bionic it's a lifetime commitment.
All the best....

I love that WW Hungry Monster, it is adorable! Wish I could find someplace to buy it.

I am glad to hear that the accupuncture is helping you. I hope it continues to do so.

Hi Danimal,
I am writing to thank you for your wonderful blog. It has been very helpful and informative to me. I am another in the failed back surgery group, with a paralysed leg from nerve damage to my back and chronic pain. I have been on a large cocktail of hydro-morph contin, cymbalta, neurontin, welbutrin etc etc with more morphine for the regular breakthrough pain for three years. Sound familiar?
I have just had my psychiatric interview to ready me for a stimulater trial. I am really on the fence about going through with this.
My questions for you (so far!)are : have you been able to reduce the amount of medication you are on as a result of having the implant? and do you find that having the stimulater has allowed you to become more active, or has it caused you to be less active so that you don't pull the leads out? I guess that that is one of my biggest concerns; that I will have to be even more careful with my back until the leads scar over and then after that, be constantly worried that the leads are going to shift or break if I bend over or lift something. Are these legitimate concerns?
Thanks for any advice that you can give me!

I recently discovered your blog, thanks for sharing! I couldn't help comment on the accupuncture post. My boss does accupuncture using moxi on animals and occasionally if I am having a painful back day (just a muscle spasm or something) he'll try to help me out. It is really great, especially when our neighbors in the office building come by and comment that it feels like they are back in college!

Happy Thanksgiving! Love, Lila

Great post.

I tried acupuncture for fibro several years ago. I was really hopeful but unfortunately, it just ended up making me worse. I've always wondered if I'd stuck it out past that first three weeks, would it have eventually gotten better?

I may end up trying it again now that I'm on better medication.

Danimal - I loved your post on acupuncture. I can't advocate for acupuncture enough. Having said that, IMHO, it only really works for those who believe that it can and also have a practioner that they trust and have a good relationship with. It's all about the right energies. I hope you continue with it if for nothing else but relaxation :)

Hi Danimal, First of all it's terrible that your blog has been "terrorized" by people that have no business visiting here in the first place! You help alot of people deal with chronic pain and it is very much appreciated. I'm still coping as best I can. I hope you and your family are doing well & are enjoying the holidays.

Thank you so much, Danimal, for your blog. We appreciate your insight, your humor and your gentle spirit. My husband is scheduled to have the Medtronic Neurostimulator implanted next week. We are keeping our fingers crossed for some relief.

Thank you, and bless you!

Hi Limojay-

I know..I'm not a fan of the comment spam either! Though I like people to be able to have their comments posted right away. For now I added the word verification requirement but if that doesn't work or is frustrating to readers, I can read all comments before they are published.

So how are you feeling? I know you say you're "coping" but that can mean a lot of things. My holidays were great and am also coping. Hoping 2010 is a good year!

Hi there - I just came across your blog and I also have a nerve stimulator. I've had it for a year and a half and barely use it. Once I was able to get up and around it took a short amount of time to work out the scar tissue wrapped around my sciatic nerve.

I still have significant low back pain that the stimulator doesn't really touch.

The problem I am having is excruciating mid-back pain where the leads were inserted. I'm wondering if you've experienced this?

I'm to the point where I'm considering having the implant removed.

I'm also wondering if acupuncture worked for you.

Thanks for any information you can provide.
